The nasoni, and where else Italian water comes from

Rome has more than 3,000 street drinking fountains, the cast-iron nasoni that have been running since 1874, and over 200 of them stand in the historic centre alone. ACEA, the utility, supplies them with the same mains water that reaches Roman houses and tests it on the same schedule. They run day and night, they cost nothing, and the traditional ones have no tap to turn.

That is one city, not the country. Outside Rome the density drops sharply and the sensible habit is to fill up when you pass a fountain rather than assume the next street has one.
