Backpackers

Water, showers and laundry for backpackers and nomads

Refilling a bottle, finding a shower, doing laundry, finding a toilet: on the road, these decide whether a day feels manageable.

  • Laundry
  • Toilets
The category filter, with showers selected and laundry, dump stations and pump-outs alongside it.

Refill a bottle instead of buying the fifth plastic one this week. Find a shower before a checkout-to-night-bus day. Work out where the laundry is before you run out of clean clothes. Long trips turn this kind of ordinary logistics into something you have to plan around.

Fontavio puts all four on one map, across Europe, US and Canada, so you are not switching between a water app, a toilet app and a forum thread from 2019. Search a city you are heading to and see what is there before you arrive.

Filling up instead of buying bottled water saves real money over months, and Europe has far more public drinking water than most visitors realise, especially in Italy, Switzerland and the Nordics.

The things that matter

01

Look somewhere up before you go

Search any city or address and the map jumps there, so you can plan tomorrow tonight instead of working it out on arrival.

02 PRO

Offline maps

Pick an area on the map and download it. The base map, the places and their details all come with it, opening hours and reviews included, so everything keeps working with no signal at all. Photos are the one thing left out, to keep the download small. Built for valleys, borders and prepaid data.

03

Filters that match the situation

Narrow by category, free or paid, open now, saved, and how you travel. All filters are free for everyone.

04

No account to browse

The whole map is usable without signing in. An account is only needed to contribute.

Look up a city before you go

Search any city and the map jumps there. These pages show samples of the available data and statistics for cities.

Backpackers: common questions

Can I look up a city before I get there?
Yes. Search any city or address and the map jumps there, so you can plan the day before you arrive rather than working it out on arrival with 4% battery.
Is there anything for public showers specifically?
Showers are one of the core categories, including beach and campground showers, some of which are free and some paid. Filter to showers and the map shows only those.
Does it work on a phone with no data abroad?
The map serves from cache for a few hours anywhere you have already opened, so temporary connection losses might not be a problem. Fontavio Pro adds downloadable country packs so an entire country works with no signal, which is the version worth having if you are crossing borders on prepaid data.
