Alpine water, and the months it flows

Vienna drinks Alpine spring water that reaches the city by gravity, piped down from the mountains to the south-west since 1873 without a single pump. The city puts it back out through roughly 1,800 public drinking fountains, in parks, at playgrounds and on markets.

Those fountains are seasonal, and that is the part worth planning around. They are drained before the frost and brought back gradually from World Water Day on 22 March, with most running by early April, so a spout that pours all July is dry in January. Between April and September the city also puts out temporary fountains at the busiest spots.
